Over the years several Star Wars cookbooks have been published. Who doesn’t remember the one called Wookiee Cookies from 1998 or last year’s BB-Ate? In November 2019, publisher Insight Editions released a brand new one: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook.
You might think “Great, another rehash of something we’ve already seen several times” but trust me: this one is different. And WAY better.
First of all, this one is written ‘in-universe’ by fictional author Strono Tugs, an alien cook who has a restaurant at the Black Spire Outpost. You might know that Black Spire is the name of the new Star Wars themed land in the two American Disney Parks. The book is written from his perspective and he shares his personal recipes, which makes the book unique as the previous ones didn’t have this.
What also makes this one stand out is that besides the Star Wars logo on the (hard)cover there are no characters or vehicles that remind you of that Galaxy Far, Far Away… And have you noticed the recipes have no funny wordplays (Boba Fettucini anyone?) or action figures in the photos of the meals and drinks? All of that is because this is a more mature cookbook. No gimmicks but actual good (and definately uncommon and otherworldy looking) recipes.
The book is divided into several parts. First, Strono Tuggs introduces himself and tells about the Black Spire outpost where a cantina, his restaurant and several other things of interest are located.
After that, the real fun begins: the recipes. There are seven sections:
- Condiments, sauces, garnishes (Nerfsteak Seasoning and 9 others)
- Sides, starters and snacks (14, including Xizor Salad)
- Soups and stews (Try Rootleaf stew from The Empire Strikes Back or the 3 others)
- Breads (Ronto Wrappers and 4 more)
- Main courses (11, Fried Endorian Tip-Yip is one of them)
- Desserts (Mandalorian Uj Cake and 11 others)
- Drinks (a whopping 14, try the Dagobah Slug Slinger!)
The big question: are the recipes any good and how difficult are they? Luckily every recipe has a difficulty indication. I’m not a very experienced chef myself and I found these (regarding the ones I actually made myself) to be accurate. Is it tasty? Let’s just say the Ronto Wrap is one of the finest home made meals I’ve enjoyed in a while. Some ingredients might be a little hard to come by but with a little imagination you’re able to find a suitable ingedient to replace it. The same can be said about swapping (or leaving out) ingredients you don’t like: I don’t eat chicken so I made my Spicy Mandalorian Stew without it.
Over the last couple of decades a lot of Star Wars books have been published and just when you think everything has been done this book comes out, refreshingly doing something that hasn’t been done.
With 176 pages, this hardcover book is an absolute must for every person who loves to prepare uncommon meals and drinks. You might not like every recipe but there’s so much to discover that there’s plenty for everyone. If you’re not a cook then this book is not for you…but still buy it for someone who is so he/she can cook you some lovely meals and snacks.
